In the U.S., people aged 65 and older represent nearly 40% of hospitalized adults, 34% of the demand for physicians, and 37% of all healthcare spending. Yet several studies have shown many healthcare professionals lack the basic understanding and knowledge of geriatric care.
The MedCerts’ Geriatrics for the Healthcare Professional course is designed to bridge that knowledge gap.
The 32-hour, two-week course is developed in partnership with an expert in geriatric care and enhances the student’s effectiveness in supporting, communicating with and understanding older adults in long-term care, hospitals, medical offices and in-home care environments.
Exclusively for people already working or seeking employment in allied health, the course covers a wide range of topics, including recognizing age-related physical, cognitive and sensory changes, and addressing the unique physical, medical, emotional and financial challenges faced by older adults. Other key areas of focus include risk management for nutrition and skin, fall prevention, healthy lifestyle habits and enhancing mental and emotional health.
Through a combination of recorded video-based lectures, guided AI assessments and 3D demonstrations and scenarios, learners are guided through the following course objectives:
- Discuss age-related physical, cognitive and sensory changes
- Distinguish unique challenges facing the geriatric population
- Recognize chronic conditions common to older adults and describe key strategies for managing them
- Identify risks to the safety and well-being of older adults and describe methods to mitigate these risks
- Express ways to enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-being of the geriatric population
- Explain dementia and age-related cognitive changes and identify skills to enhance cognitive function in older adults
- Summarize best practices for communicating with older adults
- Explain coordination of care with their entire team of care providers
- Apply basic skills for assisting an older person with activities of daily living
Learners will come out of the Geriatrics for the Healthcare Professional course with a better understanding of how to provide holistic care to older patients, addressing their physical, psychological and social needs.
The Geriatrics for the Healthcare Professional course costs $800. While it’s a standalone training curriculum, it’s also recommended for learners who have taken or plan on taking one of the following 11 MedCerts programs, especially the Certified Nursing Assistant program.
