The Professionalism in Allied Health Course

Published on

The healthcare industry is experiencing a severe staffing shortage. Hospitals, clinics and long-term care centers are struggling to retain and recruit professionals across all levels and specialties. In fact, the World Health Organization projects a 15 million worldwide deficit of healthcare workers by 2030.

There’s an expression, “well they’re good at their job but have bad bedside manner”. In healthcare, that just means someone’s bad at their job.

For example, 28% of adverse surgical events are the result of communications failures, while another study found 65% of patient satisfaction was attributed to physician empathy. Soft skills are also a problem for healthcare employees in general, as in the first year and a half, 46% of new healthcare employees underperform on issues related to work ethic and attitude.

The MedCerts Professionalism in Allied Health course clarifies expectations, giving participants a leg up in understanding soft skill expectations around patient care and workplace demeanor. The 32-hour, 2-week course was written with input from healthcare professionals working in the field, healthcare employers that hire MedCerts graduates, professional educators, as well as former MedCerts students. It focuses on instilling the highest standards of care and patient safety through ethical conduct, continuous learning and skill development.

The course is designed to cultivate trust and respect between healthcare employees and patients, as well as among colleagues, which is crucial for effective treatment, patient satisfaction and a healthy workplace. Key components of the course focus on patient interaction, proper office behavior, medical ethics, diversity and cultural bias, emotional strength, professional appearance and communication.

The MedCerts Professionalism in Allied Health eLearning course is ideal for healthcare providers who want to reinforce a high level of professional conduct for their healthcare professionals, healthcare support staff and administrators they employ and aspiring healthcare workers who are part of work-and-hire programs.

Students who complete the Professionalism in Allied Health course will learn skills and knowledge related to the following core objectives:

  • Gain an understanding of the expectations of an allied healthcare professional in the workplace
  • Develop and exercise emotional intelligence, self-management and interpersonal skills
  • Build and improve internal and external communication skills with all exchanges
  • Enhance the patient care experience with successful interactions and patient satisfaction
  • Maintain solution-oriented conversations, manage conflict and build self-confidence

The Professionalism in Allied Health course costs $500. It’s available either as an a la carte online learning course or can be taken as supplemental learning paired with a full-length MedCerts allied health training program. It’s especially recommended for students who have taken the MedCerts Certified Nursing Assistant (Partner Exclusive) program.
