What Does a Cardio-Phlebotomy Technician Do?

Phlebotomists collect blood for donation or testing to be analyzed in a clinical laboratory. Electrocardiograph (EKG or ECG) technicians perform diagnostic tests to aid doctors in identifying and treating cardiovascular problems. Combining the skills of both the EKG Specialist and Phlebotomist expands your marketability and offers opportunities in a variety of medical settings. It’s ideal for individuals who like hands-on work with direct patient interaction.

Through MedCerts phlebotomy course, you’ll learn to collect blood and other specimens for testing. Blood tests are used to diagnose illness, evaluate the effectiveness of medications and determine whether a patient is receiving proper nutrition. This progressive technology adapts hands-on clinical skills to be taught online.

In our EKG course, you’ll become proficient in performing diagnostic tests to help detect irregularities that may result in a heart attack or heart disease. You’ll learn the responsibilities related to performing EKGs, applying Holter monitors and assisting cardiologists with stress tests.

In today’s job market, many employers prefer that a Phlebotomy Technician has been trained to perform EKG procedures. Similarly, candidates for EKG Technician jobs are looked upon more favorably with Phlebotomy training or experience. This program is NOT available to students who plan to work in the states of California or Washington. Many states have licensing or certification requirements for those performing the role of a Phlebotomist. This MedCerts program is aligned with and/or prepares candidates for certification or licensure in each state except California and Washington.

Certification Exam Eligibility*

Upon completion of this program, students wishing to sit for the Certified EKG Technician exam will be required to complete a minimum of 10 EKGs on a live person. Students wishing to sit for the Certified Phlebotomy Technician exam will be required to complete 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary sticks on a live person. Students should already be working in the field to complete this requirement.

*This program has a clinical requirement of 30 venipuncture and 10 capillary sticks for the CPT exam and to perform a minimum of 10 EKGs on live individuals for the CET exam. Certifications are issued once the exam(s)have been passed and clinical requirements are met. Students are responsible for locating and securing a site to fulfill the clinical requirements of the program. MedCerts cannot guarantee they will find a student a site to complete this clinical requirement, so only students employed in a healthcare facility or take full responsibility for meeting their clinical requirements will be admitted to the program.
