The MedCerts Certified Nursing Assistant Program: Creating a Better Path to Address Your Staffing Shortage

Published on

For healthcare employers, it’s no secret filling nursing assistant positions is a constant challenge. For example, the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics found on average there are about 209,400 openings for nursing assistants, patient care technicians and patient transporters each year. In certain areas of healthcare, it’s an outright crisis. A recent study found 94% of nursing homes have a staffing shortage.

Additionally, it often feels like almost as soon as a CNA role is filled, you are back trying to staff the exact same position. The data confirms this problem is very real. A survey by NSI Nursing Solutions found in 2023 there was a turnover rate of 41.8% for Certified Nursing Assistants in hospitals.

Given these challenges, healthcare providers and workforce agencies need to find a faster and cheaper way to train and hire quality Certified Nursing Assistants.

How MedCerts Trains Quality Certified Nursing Assistants Faster

MedCerts Partners Solutions created the new Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program specifically to address those frustrations.

Developed by a dynamic team of subject matter experts, educators, and practitioners, the online interactive training program features a rigorous, purpose-driven curriculum. It meets the standards of the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) and prepares students for a wide range of other state-sponsored or state-specific CNA certification exams.

What makes the course so valuable to healthcare institutions and workforce partners is the asynchronous approach to learning. There are no textbooks, set schedules, classroom hours, or travel time. Students learn at their own pace around their existing schedules, making it ideal for upskilling existing employees and train & hire initiatives.

With an on-demand curriculum, aspiring Nursing Assistants don’t have to choose between completing coursework or clocking in at their existing positions. This is a key advantage both for students and for employers who can sponsor employee enrollment without sacrificing productivity.

The eLearning Nursing Assistant Fundamentals part of the program is designed to take 80 hours or a brisk 5 weeks to complete.

The Nurse Assistant Labs/clinical portion of the curriculum is administered by the Healthcare Employer in partnership with MedCerts Partners Solutions. The typical duration for the clinical portion of the CNA program is 64 hours or an additional 4 weeks but will vary slightly based on state requirements.

Upon completion, the student will be ready to take their CNA certification exam.

Generally, it takes anywhere from 1-6 months to complete a CNA training course. However, employers have no interest in a CNA with rushed training as that leads to more turnover.

The MedCerts Partners Solutions Certified Nursing Assistant program delivers speed without sacrificing the quality of education. The on-demand course can be completed in 9 weeks and students still receive 92% more hours of CNA instruction than the federal minimum.

A Differentiated Learning Experience

The Certified Nursing Assistant course utilizes the same award-winning immersive, augmented reality experiences as all of MedCerts programs. Included in the curriculum are 17 video-based lessons and 34 comprehensive 3D demonstrations teaching clinical patient care skills, such as performing CPR and monitoring vital signs.

The CNA program also includes 20 scenarios that model technical and human skills to foster empathy and therapeutic communication. Additionally, 8 AI-Interactives, leverage Generative AI to create custom and reactive patient interactions in a repeatable and risk-free environment.

Through the Certified Nursing Assistant course, students will complete the following course objectives:

  • Gain knowledge and skills in preparation for gaining certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).

  • Learn the state and national laws, regulations, and standards set forth by HIPAA

  • A thorough understanding of the healthcare system and nursing assistant roles

  • Knowledge of nursing assistant standards of practice

  • Learn common medical terms used in healthcare

  • Perform basic clinical procedures following protocols

  • Discuss the role of nursing assistants in long-term care facilities, acute care facilities, and home care settings

  • Develop basic skills to care for patients across the lifespan

  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal and professional skills, including effective communication and teamwork

  • Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

  • Recognize environmental safety protocols, infection control procedures, and OSHA regulations

  • Ensure clinical competence and procedural skills under supervision

  • Implement patient care practices for safety and injury prevention

A recent study of nursing students found 67.57% were extremely satisfied with online learning. MedCerts Partners Solutions provides an elevated version of that experience, using interactive skill activities to promote more critical thinking and increase student comprehension.

Where a Certified Nursing Assistant Partnership is the Right Fit

The Certified Nursing Assistant program is especially relevant for healthcare teams and supporting workforce solutions with staffing needs at hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, home healthcare solutions, adult daycare centers, and traveling CNA agencies.

Anyone with an interest in breaking into allied health can be a potential student. However, the CNA program is an ideal match for Home Health Aides, Patient Care Assistants, and Personal/Professional Caregivers who want to advance their careers in healthcare. For organizations already employing these caregivers, offering them the MedCerts CNA course is the perfect opportunity to upskill these caregivers to fill critical vacancies.

Program Cost

According to the workforce education provider Relias, replacing a CNA can cost between $3,000 to $6,000 when factoring in recruiting, onboarding, and overtime. The price of partnering with MedCerts on the Certified Nursing Assistant program is fixed at $2,000 per student.
