Working Overtime as a Case Manager: Tips to Avoid Burnout

Published on

Being a case manager is incredibly rewarding — you make a real difference in people’s lives — but it can also be demanding and exhausting. No matter how many hours you put in, there’s always more to do. If stress and long hours are taking a toll, these burnout prevention strategies can help.

Develop Efficient Processes

Streamlining tedious, time-consuming tasks can reduce your workload and allow you to accomplish more in less time. With the recent advances in technology and artificial intelligence (AI), you may be able to find software solutions that can drastically reduce your workload, particularly when it comes to repetitive data entry.

Other time-management strategies that can help you work more efficiently include batching tasks. Set aside blocks of time for similar activities, such as returning phone calls or writing emails. This minimizes interruptions and reduces the time wasted switching between different types of tasks.

You also need to set boundaries with both co-workers and clients. If you’re always on call or managing an unmanageable caseload, you’ll burn out and won’t be able to sustain your work long-term.

Prioritize Self-Care

Taking care of your clients starts with taking care of yourself — you can’t pour from an empty cup. Establish routines that allow you to get enough sleep, eat well, exercise and connect with family and friends. These all contribute to your well-being and help you replenish your energy so you can work effectively.

Meditating, journaling and spending time in nature can help center your mind so you can better manage the stress of your job. If you can’t find time for activities you enjoy, it may be a sign that your schedule is too full and needs to be reassessed.

Find the Right Partners

You don’t have to do everything yourself. The right partners can significantly reduce your workload. For example, job training programs such as MedCerts provide streamlined enrollment processes and are experienced in navigating federal funding for students.

If you match your clients with these programs, we can take over much of the paperwork and provide student support services to help your clients succeed. While you’ll still check in to monitor your clients’ progress, knowing someone else is as invested in their success can make your job easier.

In addition to providing structured services that deliver reliable student outcomes, MedCerts also has an extensive network of employers to help place students in jobs after they graduate. Career centers in job training programs can take the burden of helping your clients find a job offer. They can work with your clients to craft effective resumes and find internships and other opportunities, so you don’t have to.

Avoid Burnout for Career Longevity

The work you do is important for your clients and society, and it can seem urgent and overwhelming. By taking steps to avoid burnout and maintain a healthy work-life balance — including setting boundaries, implementing efficient processes and working with supportive partners — you’ll be able to continue doing your work long-term.
