What does a Networking Specialist do?

Network Specialists analyze, troubleshoot, and evaluate computer network problems. They ensure networks function efficiently by collecting performance data, monitoring security, anticipating problems, and troubleshooting any issues. More advanced IT pros may be responsible for building and designing communication networks as well. They play an important role in maintaining an organization’s network and keeping them safe and secure through both hardware configuration and end-user training. Network specialists and administrators are responsible for day-to-day operations and network architects and engineers design and build local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), and Intranets. Depending on the size of the company, these roles may be combined.

What You’ll Learn

IT 2250

Networking Specialist

The IT-2250: Networking Specialist program is recommended for beginning IT professionals looking to start in the field of networking. Networking is the backbone of the entire IT industry, and at its core is communication. Communicating between networks allows people to connect, share information, and collaborate. This program is designed to provide a foundational, or entry-level pathway toward two key networking certifications well known throughout the world of IT: Cisco Certified Technician (Routing and Switching), and CompTIA Network+.

This comprehensive program begins with Customer Service Skills for Techies, which teaches critical soft skills that help students improve their communication and customer service skills – but with an emphasis on improving these skills in an IT environment. From there, the foundations of networking are presented in Networking Fundamentals. The course contains almost 30 modules that cover a wide range of networking concepts – and provides a great launching-off point for the next three courses in the program.

The networking community has chosen Python as the language of choice to use for Network Programmability and allows individuals to build scripts to automate network configurations. It’s the most widely used programming language for networking today and an essential skill for network engineers to learn now. As such, this program contains a short course – Hands-on Python for Networking Professionals.

The Cisco Certified Technician (CCT) credential is ideally suited to someone who has little or no Cisco or networking experience – especially if the candidate wants to focus their career on working with Cisco products. Candidates who successfully pass the Cisco CCT exam will be able to service, repair, and hot-swap Cisco products, be familiar with the Cisco UCS and NX-OS operating modes, and be able to navigate and use the Cisco Graphical User Interface. Considered by many industry professionals to be the best foundation for Cisco networking beginners, the CCT Routing and Switching credential focuses on on-site support and maintenance of Cisco routers, switches, and operating environments. The Cisco Certified Technician Routing and Switching course adequately prepares the student for the final course in the program, Network+.

Earning Network+ Certification means the student has the knowledge needed to use and maintain a wide range of networking technologies and validates their proficiency in networking administration and support. Students learn through hands-on labs, demo activities, and recorded video lectures. CompTIA Network+ validates the technical skills needed to securely establish, maintain, and troubleshoot the essential networks that businesses rely on. Unlike the CCT certification, CompTIA Network+ prepares candidates to support networks on any platform.

Upon completion, MedCerts will sponsor the cost of both the CCT Routing and Switching and Network+ exams.
